Use your ears when riding. Do the feet sound like they are softly rebounding off the ground or are they pounding the ground? Does your horse’s breathing sound regular and soft? If you are riding a gelding, do you hear air going in and out of the sheath? Does the rhythm in the gait sound “clean and clear” or “muffled and staticky”? You can hear tension, disconnect and imbalance. You just have to train your ears to work more than your eyes.
