How long should we warm up our horses? There have actually been studies done on this. It takes 20 minutes of movement to lubricate the joints and get the synovial fluids moving around. Most text books tell you 20 minutes of work in the walk for your warm up. That doesn’t necessarily mean on a long rein plodding along. You can work on your transitions within the walk, transition to halt, laterals, etc. A correct warm up does a lot to set the tone for the rest of the ride.
