You can't contain a horse into self carriage. Messing more with your hands will not create self carriage. In self carriage the reins became unnecessary. In order for the reins to become unnecessary you must use them less. You must become more committed to being sensitive to the movements of your horse and supporting them more with the seat and leg. If you are having to use big aids in walk and trot, you will never have big enough aids in canter. Work on leaving your horse alone instead of nagging them.
