The horse must be allowed to have an opinion and input regarding the work you are requesting. You don’t have to accept their opinion. But they can’t feel threatened every time they question your request.

So what if the horses’s answer to the question. .is “I don’t want to and I don’t have to“ and I can disregard your chicken leg, tennis shoes, the neck rope and push thru all of these aids as I want to go back to the barn. Go to stronger aids?

Sounds like there is a lack of communication, balance and respect. I wrote a blog on correction that would be helpful. But generally in those situations you are describing, pause and redirecting work. Make the goal smaller. I want one step left. Then reward. Pretty soon they will be responding. If the goal is too big then the horse gets overwhelmed and shuts the rider out.
