We live in a world of instant gratification. We want what we want right now. That applies to tangible objects but it also applies to new skills. The problem is that new skills require practice, repetition and FAILURE to become proficient. We have a tendency to want to see big progress in our skills or our horse’s skills daily. It just doesn’t work that way.

Fear can paralyze us. We are afraid to make a mistake, so we don’t try something new. We are afraid to look like a beginner, so we don’t try something new. We are afraid of the amount of work a new skill will take for us to master, so we don’t try something new. We are afraid to have people watch us, so we don’t try something new. We are afraid to mess up our horse, so we don’t try something new.

Please bring your own water buckets. Do not use troughs or buckets on the property. We want to enjoy horses and limit accidental spread of any illness. Remember horses can be spreading a virus with no symptoms. Do not pet or allow your horse to interact with other horses on the property. Horses learn habits from every interaction. I have tried to give people opportunities to learn. Some working for me. Some I’ve given opportunities to use my horses. What I find is that in general, it doesn’t work out. Will I stop giving people opportunities, no. I am just way more selective about who I give those opportunities to.
