Trainer’s Tip Tuesday
Horses have defensive behaviors when they feel threatened. So do humans. When we feel insecure, our behavior and communication change. When our horse is concerned and feeling defensive it doesn’t instill confidence or security in us. Without proper conditioning and training of our nervous system, we revert to defensive behaviors. Unfortunately, this makes our horses more insecure and defensive. The chain reaction starts and the wreck is inevitable.

Wisdom Wednesday
I taught a clinic in July and had a great conversation with a participant. In her field, they do not consider you proficient at a skill until you have worked on the skill for 1000 hours. If you divide 1000 by 52, that is 19.2 hours per week. If you divide 1000 by 365, that is 2.7 hours per day. If you ride as a full-time job (40hrs a week), it will take you 25 weeks to become proficient at a new skill. 1000 hours does not create mastery or proficiency.

Trainer's Tip Tuesday
You can't teach a horse to deal with pressure by avoiding pressure. Tip toeing around our tense horses to avoid adding more pressure only makes their tension and confusion worse. What they need from us is confidence, boundaries and clear communication.

Wisdom Wednesday
In my travels I have interacted with many horses and owners. The past few weeks has pushed me to remind owners that each horse is an individual. I spoke with many owners who were following “programs” for their horses that were purchased from internationally known trainers. The big issue was that they were trying to apply set methods and programs to every horse with the same intensity. Some horses accepted it even if they were confused. Some horses were pushed way over thresho

Trainer’s Tip Tuesday
Your horse should be able to handle time off without training falling apart. Taking a two week vacation should not make you lose ground with your horse. Breaks can even be beneficial.

Wisdom Wednesday
Horses know how to be horses. The behavior they are displaying reflects how they feel in the moment based on their past experiences. They aren’t trying to be naughty, annoy you, embarrass you, trying to get out of work, etc. The horse is responding to how they feel in that moment. If you are deregulated and stressed, your horse will reflect that. Your horse may have been deregulated first but that doesn’t give you an excuse to follow them into deregulation. We must first lear

Trainer’s Tip Tuesday
I LOVE horses, just in case you hadn’t noticed 😉. That being said, sometimes loving them isn’t enough. While traveling and teaching I run into people who have found horses they love. However, they purchased a “deal”, got a free horse, or rescued a horse out of a poor situation. Often times these horses are a bit more than they bargained for.

June Master Zoom
I am trying hard to have this Zoom on 6/18 at 7p cst. I have a dog that is struggling and a husband out of the country. There are some errands that I must run tomorrow. If that runs long, then I will reschedule for Saturday evening. Please be patient!

Trainer’s Tip Tuesday
If life is getting in the way and your riding is sporadic, walking is your friend. Focus on the details in your walk. Straightness and bend. Work on your three walks. Transitions will get your horse stronger. We need strength then mobility. Straight is strong. Crooked is crippled. Forward is your friend. Faster creates chaos.
