Show up for your horse. It’s not your horse’s job to show up for you. It’s not your horse’s job to make you feel better, safe, more secure, more confident. It is your job to do that for the horse. Your horse is not a volunteer for your hopes and dreams. You require your horse to show up as an assignment.  Therefore, you have to bring your best to the relationship and your best to the your session if you want your horse to perform their best.

Bracing creates more bracing. It doesn’t matter if you are on the ground or in the saddle. Every time you are tempted to brace against your horse, hang on the rein/rope, pull, stop and give instead. Give for one step. Then repeat your request. Stop after three attempts. Reset, re-evaluate. Do not continue the brace no matter what. Yes late but better late than never

Yes late. I’ve had a full plate troubleshooting for clients. I have had several messages this week with people frustrated over their horse’s behavior. They want to tell me the laundry list of things the horse did wrong. Many times I start the conversation with, “if I could ask your horse, what would they tell me about you?” I might also ask for them to tell me something that was good. You get what you pay for. I have been saying this a lot lately.

Consistently showing up goes a long way with your horse.

Too much. We are too quick, too busy, too intense. We easily overwhelm our horses by not being aware of what we are doing, how fast we are doing it and the intensity that we are using in our communication. When we are doing too much our horses will react one of two ways: they will ignore us or get anxious.
