We need to practice pause. When we are not getting what we want from our horses, we tend to get louder, more busy. Some horse tolerate that. Some do not. More often than not, when we our horses is not responding to our request, we should pause, not pressure. Pressure is not necessarily wrong. However, often we are better to pause, let the horse think through the request, evaluate our aids and then repeat the request. After a few pauses, we will often see horses ‘catch on’ to our request quickly. If they do not, we might need to evaluate to see if the horse is strong enough for our request, in pain, or if we have skipped some steps or used conflicting aids.
