What if you were dumped into a new culture and language? What if you had to learn a new word everyday? You needed to be able to spell the word. You needed to be able to give the definition of the word and use the word correctly in a sentence. How long do you think it would take to become proficient in the language? How long before you could carry on a conversation? How long before you could write a grammatically correct sentence with substance? Would your ability to learn be helped by an encouraging instructor / mentor or hindered by a negative instructor / mentor?
