Trainers Tip Tuesday
Lunging your horse should not look like you are flying a kite and the kite is trying to pull away from you. Remember all ground work translates to your ridden work. If you have allowed your horse to run around in a circle, haunches flying to the outside, head pulled to the inside fighting against the resistance, why would you expect anything different under saddle? Lunging should not be about getting the fresh off, wearing the horse out, running them in circles. It should hav

Value
I wrote this several years ago. It popped up today and is still true. If a horse makes it to 4yrs old at our house and I have started it, it’s likely not leaving my house. I like them. I have too much time in them. It would take someone with a special connection and a check with multiple zeros behind the first number to get them out of my pasture.

The Other Side
I refused to spook with her. I allowed her to work through her emotional troubles. I did not try to prevent the emotional overloads.

These timers have been a life saver coming into summer. I have them set to come on mid day to refresh waters in the heat of the day. I turn on the manual timers at night to fill the troughs up. The timer automatically shuts them off. So no more forgetting to turn off the water! They come with more than one zone if you want I have one I can hook up to 4 hoses to battery operated.

Horses are not machines
Shutting down is a self preservation method in prey animals. They aren’t learning. They are complying to survive.

Judging Takeaways
You have to give to get. If your horse is leaning on the rein, taking more rein is not the answer.
This is a working sport.

My phone. I know this wasn’t what you were expecting. But let me point out a few things. The slow motion video function! It is such a great tool to see if your horse is moving evenly in all limbs, landing heel first, reaching from its hind leg. You can use aps such as coaches eye, measures, pic stitch to instantly check angles and compare images. You can get robot cameras that use your phone and monitor your riding. Videos and pictures are easier to get. Less set up and prep

Wisdom Wednesday
Reactive is not the same as responsive A reactive horse is one that is stuck in survival mode. They are in a constant state of anxiety. They don’t trust their rider/handler to make good decision on their behalf. The horse doesn’t have a good leader and feels the need to react in the name of self preservation. A responsive horse is a secure animal that is easily adjustable and ready to execute the request of the rider/handler. These horses have found a trusted herd leader and

Trainer’s Tip Tuesday
Don’t underestimate the power of just practicing standing tied. During all this wet weather in Texas it has been hard to get horses worked. But having them stand tied while you groom, feed, clean or sit and read a book has many positive effects for your horse. A horse that can stand tied patiently is easier to haul, doctor, and groom. So don’t let the wet weather stop you from working on some basics.
